An Extern is a nursing student who is hired by one of the Main Line
Health entities (Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Paoli
Hospital and Riddle Hospital). Typically, externs are hired while
completing their junior year of nursing school. Externs are hired to a
specific unit to work as a Patient Care Technician and have their own
patient assignment. Responsibilities include AM care, PM care, EKGs,
blood glucose monitoring and finger sticks, but may vary depending on
the unit. Phlebotomy training may be an option for those students
working year round
2) What are the requirements to be eligible to apply?
a. Enrollment in an accredited BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing)
b. Completion of at least one clinical rotation (acute care)
3) What clinical areas are available?
Externs are hired into various clinical areas, depending on positions.
Externs are hired into a specific unit, but are able pick up shifts in
other units as well.
4) What are the hours/shifts available?
For the most part, there are evening shifts (3PM to 11:30PM), night
shifts (11PM to 7:30AM), and weekend shifts available for Externs.
Externs who start in May work 48 hours bi-weekly, including every other
weekend during the summer, with the option of picking up additional
hours. After returning to school, Externs work “As Needed” throughout
the school year. The program is very flexible with the nursing school
schedule. Externs who start in December work “As Needed,” which requires
a minimum of two shifts per month.

If offered a position, Externs begin orientation either in May or

Each Extern will complete 4 days of classroom training and a day and a
half of Main Line Health orientation. Externs will then begin an
orientation on the unit with a preceptor. Externs work with their
manager, educator, and preceptor to determine a clinical orientation

A general application is posted on the website for the December 2011 and
May 2012programs. If you are selected for an interview, you will be
scheduled to interview for a specific unit depending on availability and
your clinical areas of interest
8) What Main Line Health hospitals participate in the program?
All five of the Main Line Health entities participate in the nurse
residency program. This includes Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr
Hospital, &Paoli Hospital, Riddle Hospital and Bryn Mawr Rehab
