Lankenau Cancer Center is one of a few centers in the Philadelphia area
to have a board-certified orthopaedic oncologist, Richard G. Schmidt,
MD, on staff. Dr. Schmidt specializes in tumors occurring in the
connective tissues of bone, cartilage, muscle and/or fat; primary bone
and soft tissue sarcomas; bone reconstruction and limb-sparing surgery
and metastatic bone cancers.
In patients with metastatic disease to bone, the benefits of early
orthopaedic surgical treatment are significant. Patients can walk soon
after surgery, maintaining their independence, and are less likely to
develop secondary complications from prolonged bed rest.
Dr. Schmidt will coordinate with your medical and radiation oncologists
to ensure the optimal treatment plan is developed.
