No visit to the Health Education Center at Lankenau is complete without
meeting Pandora, our transparent, talking mannequin. For almost 50
years, Pandora has been showing children the wonders of the human body.
Lankenau Medical Center's Pandora welcomes students to the Health
Education Center and serves as our official hostess and in-house health
Pandora provides kids with an up close and interactive look into the
workings of human body. She talks, she moves, she even lights up like a
pinball machine! Through Pandora, kids gain a greater understanding of
each of the body's organs and systems…not to mention an experience that
they'll remember for a long time.
Pandora was originally built in the Deutsches Gesundheits-Museum in
Cologne, Germany in 1955 where she was known as “Fraulein Gesundheit”.
In 1956, the Museum sent Pandora to her new home at Lankenau Medical
Center. Her transatlantic trip was quite an experience! She traveled
aboard the Berlin a North German ocean liner. The ship battled strong
winds at sea. The ship finally arrived in New York Harbor with “The
Lady” aboard on October 15, 1956.
Three days later, on October 18, Pandora made her grand entrance at
Lankenau Medical Center. She arrived at the hospital's emergency room
entrance in a large red truck, very quietly in the afternoon. She
traveled in four large crates. One crate contained a six foot pedestal;
the second a revolving pedestal. Still a third contained a console with
more buttons, gadgets and dials than the organ in Radio City Music Hall!
And in a fourth crate was…The Talking Transparent Woman herself!
During her first year at Lankenau, the hospital held a contest for local
students to give "The Talking Transparent Woman" a new name. A fifth
grade boy entered the name “Pandora”—comparing the human body to
Pandora's Box from Greek mythology—and won! He received a $25.00 savings
bond as his prize (a lot of money back then!)
In the years since, thousands of kids from all across the Delaware
Valley and Philadelphia area have met the amazing Pandora and taken part
in programs and classes at the Health Education Center. We hope you or
your kids visit the Health Education Center and let Pandora
become part of your health education.
