Paoli Hospital’s Doug Smith, R.N., Staff Nurse in the Emergency
Department was the recipient of the third annual Sandy McAleer Nursing
Award recently. The award, which was established in memory and honor of
Sandy McAleer, former President of the Paoli Hospital Auxiliary and an
intensive care unit nurse for close to 30 years, is given annually to a
Paoli Hospital nurse who possesses nursing skill, mentors young nurses,
volunteers in the community, and contributes to their profession.
Doug, commonly called a ‘gentle giant’ by his peers, was chosen as this
year’s recipient due to his mentoring and precepting the hospital’s new
graduate nurses. He remains a mentor for many of the nurses he has
precepted. Doug is well respected by the physician partners as a leader
among the hospital’s nurses. Doug also volunteers in the community as
the emergency manager for West Brandywine Township.
