Nephrology is the medical specialty concerned with the kidneys. The
nephrologists at Bryn Mawr Hospital offer advanced techniques in the
diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and medical kidney (renal)
problems, including chronic and acute renal disorders, nephrolithiasis
(kidney stones), diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease), renal failure,
difficult-to-control hypertension and certain complications of
pregnancy. Persons with advanced kidney failure are treated in dialysis
units available to inpatients and outpatients at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Dialysis
Bryn Mawr Hospital provides acute inpatient hemodialysis and acute
peritoneal dialysis. Continuous arteriovenous hemodialysis is available
for critically ill patients with acute renal failure.
Chronic hemodialysis and chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis are
provided at Bryn Mawr to outpatients with chronic end-stage renal
failure. Patients in these outpatient dialysis units are supervised by
registered nurses. A home training program is provided for patients on
continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).
