The Neurodiagnostic/Vascular Center at Paoli Hospital performs a wide
variety of noninvasive, diagnostic tests of the brain, nervous system
and circulatory system. Our neurodiagnostic laboratory features
state-of-the-art digital equipment that allows us to share information
with referring physicians and other specialists at Main Line Health
hospitals.
Electroencephalography (EEG)
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a procedure that records and measures
the electrical activity of the brain, or brain waves. This noninvasive
technique is frequently used to evaluate brain function or disorders.
EEG may be performed to diagnose or assess any number of conditions or
diseases that affect the brain, including: epilepsy, stroke, brain
injury, coma, mental retardation, encephalitis, cognitive impairment,
brain tumors or certain psychological disorders.
Ambulatory EEG Monitoring
When data are required over a longer period of time, we offer 24-,
48- and 72-hour ambulatory EEG monitoring for patients of all ages.
Portable EEG devices allow patients to carry on with their normal
routines while data is recorded and analyzed. Ambulatory EEG is
especially effective in the evaluation of epilepsy or seizure disorders,
including nocturnal seizures. Ambulatory EEG is also a useful diagnostic
tool when investigating patients with:
-
Syncope (fainting)
-
Transient global amnesia
-
Dizziness
-
Unidentified episodes of confusion or altered state
EEG with Extended Video Monitoring
Extended video monitoring is used with some patients having questionable
seizures and unusual neurological symptoms. In this process, patients
undergo a prolonged EEG (4 to 5 hours) with video monitoring.
