In October 2005, Main Line Health Hospitals' nursing service at Bryn Mawr, Lankenau and Paoli Hospitals was awarded Magnet™ designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the nation's highest award for recognizing excellence in nursing care.

The Magnet Recognition Program™  was developed by the ANCC (a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association) in 1994 to recognize healthcare organizations that provide the very best nursing care. Magnet™ designation is accepted nationally as the gold standard in nursing excellence.

To achieve Magnet™ status, organizations must apply to the ANCC and undergo a vigorous, multi-faceted evaluation. The standards are tough. As of Summer 2004, less than 3% of the nation's hospitals had qualified for Magnet™ designation.

Magnet™ status is awarded for a four-year period, after which the organization must reapply.

According to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations: "Independently sponsored research shows that Magnet™ facilities have positive outcomes for patients, nurses and workplaces. Specifically, patients experience lower mortality rates, shorter lengths of stay and increased satisfaction; nurses experience increased job satisfaction, increased perceptions of quality care given and increased RN mix; and workplaces have a lower incidence of needlestick injuries, increased RN retention and recruitment rates, and lower rates of nurse burnout."
