The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Lankenau Hospital began more than 100 years ago. Today we have a dedicated and experienced faculty and more than 150 active members of the
medical staff. The majority of our medical staff has academic appointments at Thomas Jefferson University's Jefferson Medical
College.
Our goal is to train internists who will not only go on to pass their ABIM examination, but dedicate their lives and careers
to becoming lifelong learners of Internal Medicine. We work closely with individual residents to help them develop and achieve
their professional goals.
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Lankenau Hospital offers opportunities in a number of specialties. National Resident
Matching Program (NRMP) positions for which the Hospital is currently approved are:
-
13 Preliminary one-year positions
-
13 First year Categorical Resident positions
-
13 Second year Resident positions
-
13 Third year Resident positions
Internal Medicine at Main Line Health Our program offers a comprehensive Internal Medicine training experience combining outstanding academic teaching in didactic,
small group and bedside settings with direct patient care. The program offers a wide variety of subspecialty electives and
outpatient rotations in private practices.
We also offer fellowships in Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, General Cardiovascular Diseases, Electrophysiology and Interventional Cardiology. In addition, there are shared fellowship programs with Thomas Jefferson University in Pulmonary/Critical Care and Infectious
Diseases. Our first year class is half categorical interns and half preliminary interns with a total cohort of residents of
over 50 each year.
Academics Balanced with Clinical Experience Our program provides a nice balance of rigorous academic teaching and extensive clinical experience. Lankenau is a mixture
of community hospital and tertiary care center with over 260 inpatient beds. Our affiliation with the Lankenau Institute of Medical Research (LIMR) also provides an opportunity for both basic science and clinical research. Residents in our categorical program are
expected to complete an original research project in the course of their training and are welcome to join ongoing projects
in the research center.
Facilities The Department of Medicine includes a Cardiac Catheterization Unit, Cardiac Electrophysiology Unit, a Pulmonary Function Laboratory,
Endoscopy Suites, Cardiopulmonary Laboratory, Cancer Center, Renal Dialysis Units, Sleep Medicine Services, and special studies
and research laboratories in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases, Hematology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology, Infectious
Diseases, and Rheumatology.
