The Lankenau Hospital's fourth-year clinical clerkship for medical students consists of four weeks and can be used in a variety
of ways between Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, and Reproductive Endocrinology. A student may choose to spend
the entire four weeks on one of the above services, or split the time spending two weeks each on two of the subspecialties.
Two weeks is the minimum amount of time that can be spent on any one subspecialty service, each of which is outlined below.
Senior students take night call once a week, one call of which is a Saturday or Sunday.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine - The MFM service includes time in the busy out-patient Perinatal Testing Center where ultrasounds, non-stress tests, amniocentesis,
PUBS, CVS, etc. are performed. By shadowing and learning from the experienced technicians, students receive good exposure
to ultrasonic techniques, under the supervision of one of Lankenau's three maternal fetal medicine specialists and one geneticist.
In addition, with the upper-year resident on MFM, the student follows patients admitted to the Antepartum Unit. These monitored
beds are dedicated to high risk obstetric patients requiring admission. Pregnancy-induced hypertension, pre-eclampsia, diabetes
mellitus, and premature/prolonged rupture of membranes are some of the more common complications of pregnancy to which the
student is exposed. This floor is also a triage area for Labor and Delivery.
Gynecologic Oncology - The Gyn Oncology service is very busy. It includes ample exposure to surgical procedures and caring for critically ill
patients, both post-operatively and those admitted for evaluation and management of complications, or treatment of their disease.
Working with the upper-year resident, under the direct supervision of the two faculty gynecologic oncologists, the student
learns the medical and surgical management of pelvic malignancies. Additionally, time is spent in the gynecologic oncologists’
private office where colposcopy, cryosurgery and other minor diagnostic procedures are performed. One of the gynecologic
oncologist has special talent with laparoscopic surgery and is credentialed in DaVinci robotic surgery, which adds another
dimension to the student’s experience.
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility - You may receive experience at all three Main Line Health hospitals (Lankenau, Bryn Mawr and Paoli) during your time on
REI with our three reproductive endocrinologists. Laparoscopic and reproductive surgery is done at Lankenau; the IVF Center
and office patients are at Bryn Mawr, and there are two satellite out-patient offices at Paoli and Chester County Hospitals.
Your training occurs in the operating room and the offices where each of the reproductive endocrinologists share their special
talents and interests with you. The Center for Reproductive Medicine at Bryn Mawr has the largest volume in the region.
One of the reproductive endocrinologists is internationally known for performing myomectomies on women with fibroids who prefer
not to have a hysterectomy.
