Duties, benefits and compensation for residents in the General Surgery Residency Training Program at Lankenau Hospital are as follows:

Night and Weekend Duty
Residents' night and weekend duty varies somewhat with each rotation; the Program Director can respond to specific questions.

Quarters
All house staff are assigned on-call rooms in the hospital quarters. Permanent living quarters are not provided within the main Hospital, but there are many apartment buildings and other housing options nearby, in both the suburbs and the city.

Doctors' Offices
Approximately 100 of the attending staff have private offices in the adjacent Medical Office Buildings. This permits house staff to follow patients in ambulatory settings.

Laundry
Laundry of uniforms is furnished to all house staff without cost.

Insurance
The benefit package includes insurance coverage for hospitalization and major medical expenses and a dental plan for both the trainee and his/her family, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, and long-term disability coverage. There is also a Main Line Health Prescription Drug Program.

Malpractice Insurance
Malpractice insurance coverage is provided by the Hospital for all residents. Coverage extends only to duties performed on behalf of the resident's respective training program. The cost of malpractice coverage in any other clinical care (i.e. moonlighing) is the individual's responsibility.

Vacations
First year residents receive two weeks of vacation per year. Residents in the second postdoctoral year and beyond are allowed three weeks per year, not including the allowed time for attending national meetings.
