The Bryn Mawr Family Practice Residency ProgramIntroduction/Overview
The Bryn Mawr Family Practice Residency Program was established in 1975, and enrolls 12 residents, evenly divided between first-, second- and third-year residents. When these physicians complete their training, they have developed a sophisticated level of knowledge, skills and clinical experience, as well as a personal concern for the patient.

Vision and Goals
The overall goal of the Bryn Mawr Family Practice Residency Program (BMFPRP) is to educate graduate physicians to become specialists as Family Physicians; physicians who will assume the responsibility for providing comprehensive, quality health care for the patient and family, by taking into account the biologic, cultural, social, ethical and economic dimensions involved.

The vision of the Bryn Mawr Family Practice Residency Program is to provide educational experiences and resources so that family physicians can learn to be competent, Board Certified, compassionate physicians who care for their patients, their families, and their community. These physicians learn that growth is a continuous process. The BMFPRP emphasizes the individuality of the patient, in the context of the family and community. Continuity of care is given high priority. The BMFPRP stimulates and nurtures intellectual curiosity, as well as the academic discipline needed to continue one's individual professional development.

A balance is needed in one's personal and one's professional life. Through the caring, sharing, and nurturing environment at the BMFPRP, the resident physicians gain perspective in the priorities of their lives for themselves, their families and their work. The rotations, call, and the goals and objectives for each clinical rotation are based on the ability for the resident to perform well when rested, when stimulated, and when challenged. In providing a very nurturing environment for residents, the BMFPRP gives them the opportunity to learn without fear of failure, or being overwhelmed, alone, or without support or supervision. In addition, residents learn how to establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

The progressive merger of Bryn Mawr Hospital into Main Line Health, then the Jefferson Health System, has provided an opportunity for closer collaboration between BMFPRP and Thomas Jefferson University FPRP in research, training in Obstetrics, and other areas. The family physician, now and in the future, holds a key position in any health care system. By being part of an integrated health care system, the family practice residents at BMFPRP are able to provide comprehensive care to patients of our community regardless of their method of payment, age, disease, or socioeconomic status. The resources of such a system help to develop a structured, nurturing environment in which the family physician can gain confidence and skills for the future. BMFPRP strives to utilize the strengths of the system - shared medical staff, consolidation of resources, and a growing practice network - to maximize the people, practices, and practice settings from which the residents can learn. In return, BMFPRP strives to serve as a model practice and resource for the larger organizations of which it is a part.

Our program's ultimate goal remains to provide family physicians to our community: physicians who have the highest degree of ethical standards, proficiency in physical diagnosis and appropriate procedures, and sensitivity to the individual and their situation.
