Main Line Health's Origins and Evolution as a Health Provider
Main Line Health is a not-for-profit healthcare system near Philadelphia that includes three acute care hospitals, a physical
rehabilitation hospital, home care, physician practices, a research institute, and other facilities and services. Main Line
Health employs approximately 8,000 employees. Some 1,250 physicians are members of its medical staff.
In 1985, Lankenau Hospital and Bryn Mawr Hospital, together with Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, formed Main Line Health. In 1986,
Paoli Memorial Hospital joined the System. The governance of Main Line Health was reorganized into a single Board of Governors
and a single management structure in 1996. At the same time, the medical staffs of the three acute care hospitals voted to
become a single medical staff. Also in 1996, Main Line Health and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital formally created Jefferson
Health System. Since then, the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, Frankford Health System, and Magee Rehabilitation Hospital
have also joined JHS as founding members. JHS is recognized as the largest and strongest healthcare system in the Delaware
