About the Main Line Health Stroke Program <
Thank you for your interest in Main Line Health's Stroke Program. It is my pleasure to be able to describe to you a complete program, managed by medical professionals who have knowledge of
the entire network of services that stroke patients and their families need. Our goal is to bring this care together in a
way that guarantees that each of our patients benefits from the full range of today's know-how in stroke prevention, diagnosis,
treatment, and rehabilitation.
As you will read on the stroke pages of this site, the time has indeed arrived when community teaching hospitals such as the
Main Line Health hospitals can offer state-of-the-science care for stroke. With this in mind, we are currently conducting
a StrokeAwareness Campaign to reach out to our surrounding four-county area to promote an understanding of stroke risk and
of the urgency with which stroke symptoms must be addressed. Strokes are "brain attacks" that need care just as rapidly as
do heart attacks. With advances over the last few years, stroke has become a much more treatable event.
Our program has all of the experience and resources that stroke patients and their families could hope to find. Currently,
we treat about 900 patients a year with strokes and transient ischemic attacks. We have 16 neurologists actively treating stroke
patients in our three hospitals. And we have two neuroradiologists on our team, taking advantage of five advanced CT scanners
and four MRI units. As well, we are able to take advantage of a number of new radiologic techniques allow us to non-invasively
"see into" the brain to spot new strokes and see their locations.
While our emphasis is on acute treatment and prevention, we are also involved in all facets of stroke medicine, including
clinical research trials. We now have a number of patient studies running on our campuses to evaluate drugs aimed at preventing
stroke and reducing its effects.
Participating in the American Stroke Association's Operation Stroke Project, we have promoted a continuum of prompt, comprehensive
care that serves patients from the first signs of stroke, through to rehabilitation and return to activities. Our staff recently
led the Philadelphia area in number of stroke screenings administered as part of Operation Stroke.
With our emphasis on coordination of care, we work to assure a high level of patient follow-up for everyone who is a part
of our program. We encourage you to contact us if you have questions concerning evaluation, prevention, ongoing medical care
or rehabilitative services for stroke.
