System Information Senior Management at Main Line Health John J. Lynch, III John J. (Jack) Lynch, III, serves as president and chief executive officer of Main Line Health. Mr. Lynch came to Main Line Health in August of 2005 after almost 20 years as an executive with the St. Luke's Episcopal Health System in Houston, Texas. Mr. Lynch joined St. Luke's in 1986 as an assistant vice president and rose steadily to the position of executive vice president and chief operating officer for the system, as well as chief executive officer of St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. St. Luke's Episcopal Health System comprises St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in the Texas Medical Center; St. Luke's Community Medical Center-The Woodlands; St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities, a charity devoted to assessing and enhancing community health, and Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, consisting of 21 Houston-area facilities. Mr. Lynch is a native of Washington, D.C. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, and his master of health administration from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a diplomate of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has served on the board of a wide variety of professional associations including the Texas Hospital Association and the Greater Houston Hospital Counsel. Mr. Lynch also brings a strong background in community service, having chaired the healthcare campaign of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, served on a committee of the Greater Houston Partnership, and been a board member and chairman of both The Hospice at the Texas Medical Center and the Houston Hospice and Palliative Care System. Mr. Lynch and his family reside in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Mike Buongiorno Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer Mike Buongiorno is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Main Line Health. Mike joined Main Line Health in 1994 as the Regional Chief Financial Officer for the Main Line's Western Operations, primarily Paoli Memorial Hospital and Bryn Mawr Rehab. In 1996 he became the Assistant Vice President for Financial Support, which included budget, planning, reimbursement, external reporting and internal audit. In 1997, he assumed his current role. Prior to joining Main Line Health, Mike was the Chief Financial Officer of Mercy Community Hospital, and he also spent 13 years with Coopers & Lybrand, where he specialized in health care, manufacturing and energy related areas. Mike was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received BS from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA and is a Certified Public Accountant. Brian T. Corbett, Esq. Brian Corbett is Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Main Line Health, Inc. Mr. Corbett joined Main Line Health as Associate General Counsel in 1994. After Main Line Health became a member institution in Jefferson Health System, he served as Vice President, Legal Affairs for Jefferson Health System. In 2001, Mr. Corbett was named Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Main Line Health, Inc. Mr. Corbett has practiced health law exclusively since 1984. Immediately prior to joining Main Line Health, Mr. Corbett was the Director of Legal Services for Franciscan Health System, Group East, which consisted of seven acute care community hospitals. Prior to that, Mr. Corbett was an Associate in the Health Law Departments of Wolf, Block Schorr and Solis-Cohen and Saul, Ewing, Remick & Saul, where he developed expertise in health care business transactions and the legal and regulatory issues attendant to such transactions. Mr. Corbett received his law degree from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. where he was a member of the Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Mr. Corbett is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the Pennsylvania Society of Healthcare Attorneys and the Health Lawyers Section of the New Jersey Hospital Association. He is licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Andrea Gilbert Andrea Gilbert joined Main Line Health in June of 2000 as the Senior Vice President, Bryn Mawr Hospital. She was named President of Bryn Mawr Hospital in 2002. In this role, she has overall responsibility for the hospital, including day-to-day operations, strategic planning, clinical program development, and finances. Ms. Gilbert has more than 20 years experience in healthcare and hospital administration, including positions at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, DC; the Inova Health System in Falls Church, VA, and the Allegheny and Tenet Systems in Philadelphia. Before joining Bryn Mawr Hospital, Ms. Gilbert was the Chief Executive Officer at City Avenue Hospital in Philadelphia. Ms. Gilbert's experience includes the planning and implementation of a regional women's hospital, development of a Level I Trauma Center, a multi-specialty women's center and an occupational health program. In addition, she has extensive experience in ambulatory care, cardiac services, and community health programs. Ms. Gilbert is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, and holds a Masters Degree in Health Administration & Planning from Johns Hopkins University. Ms. Gilbert and her husband have three children and have lived in Penn Valley, Lower Merion Township, since 1985. Daniel E. Kennedy Daniel E. Kennedy is President and Chief Executive Officer of Riddle Memorial Hospital and the Riddle Health System in Media, Pennsylvania. Mr. Kennedy joined Riddle Memorial Hospital in 1979 and was Executive Vice President prior to becoming President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2001. He has the overall responsibility for the operations of Riddle Memorial Hospital and six other corporations, which comprise the Riddle Health System. Prior to joining Riddle, Mr. Kennedy was an Executive with the Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby, Pennsylvania. Mr. Kennedy is a native of Pottsville, Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Scranton and his Master of Business Administration from the Fox Business School of Temple University. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Regional Policy Board of the American Hospital Association, and Board of the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council. Mr. Kennedy is active with youth coaching activities and other community organizations. Mr. Kennedy and his wife have two children and reside in West Chester, PA. Donna M. Phillips Donna Phillips, President of Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital since 2004, is responsible for strategic long-range planning and management of governing and foundation boards, as well as day-to-day management of rehabilitation and senior services for all of Main Line Health, which includes:
Ms. Phillips, who earned her bachelor's degree at Long Island University and an M.B.A. degree from Eastern College, is a Registered Health Information Administrator with 16 years of experience in non-profit healthcare management and growth. Since joining the Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital administrative staff in 1995, she has held positions with increasing levels of responsibility, including Director of Record and Review Systems, Director of Hospital Support Services, and Vice President of Clinical and Support Services. She lives in Malvern with her husband, Christopher, and their two children. Barbara J. Tachovsky, RN, MS Barbara J. Tachovsky, R.N., M.S. is the senior executive responsible for operations of Paoli Hospital. Until 2006, Ms. Tachovsky also served double-duty as the Chief Nursing Officer for the Main Line Hospitals, which included responsibility for implementing a system-wide nursing recruitment and retention plan. She has been with Main Line Health for 16 years in a variety of administrative assignments, including 10 years as Vice President for Nursing at Paoli. Prior to coming to Paoli Hospital and Main Line Health, Ms. Tachovsky was an administrator at Chester County Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital in Lancaster, as well as the Director of the School of Nursing at Chester County Hospital. Ms. Tachovsky received her nursing degree at the University of Pennsylvania, a BS from West Chester University, and earned a master's degree in administration from the University of Delaware. She is a Trustee for the Nightingale Foundation of Pennsylvania and a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She and her husband reside in Kennett Square, PA. Elaine Thompson, Ph.D. Dr. Thompson came to Lankenau from the St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem, PA, where she most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer. During her tenure at St. Luke's, Dr. Thompson oversaw an ambitious renovation and expansion of the hospital's facilities. She also provided administrative leadership to the St. Luke's Regional Heart Center. Before joining St. Luke's, Dr. Thompson spent eight years with the University of Pennsylvania Health System where her responsibilities included directing physical and occupational therapy services, leading the UPHS trauma network, and serving as associate hospital director for medical support services. Dr. Thompson also has operated her own sports medicine and physical therapy centers in New Jersey. Dr. Thompson earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, holds a Masters in physical therapy from
Temple University and a doctorate in biomedical science from Drexel University. She is a member of numerous professional associations,
including the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has extensive experience in community involvement and civic leadership.
Dr. Thompson was raised in Lower Bucks County. She and her husband have three grown children. Donald C. Arthur, MD Dr. Arthur is responsible for all clinical health services; physician contracts; credentials and clinical appointments; laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology services; infection control; risk management; disaster planning; medical informatics, graduate and continuing medical education, and human subject research programs. Dr. Arthur came to Main Line Health in 2007 following a 33 year career in the U. S. Navy, culminating in his role as its 35th Surgeon General. As Surgeon General, he was responsible for delivery of medical and dental services to over 700,000 active duty service members and 2.6 million retirees and family members. His oversight included 28 hospitals, 266 free standing clinics, 4 regional support offices, and 6 research centers in 4 countries. Dr. Arthur has been the Chief Executive Officer of two medical facilities: the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and the Naval Hospital in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. For five years, he was Chief of the Navy Medical Corps, responsible for personnel policies, recruiting, career planning, graduate medical education, research activities, and all other professional programs for the Navy's 4100 physicians. Other Navy assignments included service as the Deputy Surgeon General, Navy Medicine's Chief Operating Officer, Medical Center Chief Operating Officer, Department Head for Emergency Medicine at a residency training Medical Center, Director of Medical Programs for the Marine Corps, Senior Medical Officer aboard an aircraft carrier, practicing physician in a variety of clinical settings, and researcher in the environmental sciences. He also saw combat action while assigned to a Marine Corps unit during Desert Storm. A native of Northampton, Massachusetts, Dr. Arthur received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. After a surgical internship, he completed Navy training in aviation, submarine, and diving medicine. Dr. Arthur is residency trained in emergency medicine and attained board certification in Emergency Medicine and Preventive Medicine (Aerospace). He is a Fellow and Past President of the Aerospace Medical Association and was President of the Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S. Kenneth E. Kirby Kenneth E. Kirby joined Main Line Health as Senior Vice President of Development in November 2004. In this role, Mr. Kirby oversees activities to generate philanthropic support for MLH's member hospitals. Mr. Kirby brings almost 30 years of development experience to Main Line Health. Most recently, he served as Executive Vice President for the Franklin Institute, where he planned, implemented, and directed a number of major fundraising efforts, including a major capital campaign that raised more than $60 million for the Institute. He has experience in strategic planning, Board relations and governance, government affairs, program management and marketing and public relations. In 2002, he was voted "Fund Raising Executive of the Year" by the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the American Association of Fund Raising Professionals. Mr. Kirby is on the board of directors and fund raising committee of the National Adoption Center. He is also affiliated with the Association of Fund Raising Professionals, the American Association of Museums and the Association of Science and Technology Museums. Mr. Kirby lives in Havertown. JoAnn M. Magnatta JoAnn Magnatta joined Main Line Health in 2001 as Senior Vice President, Facilities, Design and Construction. In this role, she oversees all MLH capital construction projects, real estate management, and medical office building management. Ms. Magnatta began her healthcare career in 1988 at the Medical College of Pennsylvania as Assistant to the Dean. She progressed through various Facilities and Real Estate positions at MCP and within the Allegheny University Hospitals System including Assistant Director, then Director of Facilities, Planning and Development; Vice President of Operations and then Regional Vice President, Facilities. In 1998 she became Regional Director of Facilities for Tenet Healthcare's Pennsylvania Region. In 1999, Ms. Magnatta became Corporate Vice President of Real Estate Services and Facilities at Continuum Services, a five Hospital Healthcare System, in New York. Prior to her career in Healthcare, Ms. Magnatta worked at the U.S. Senate and also taught and served as a High School Department Chairman for several years. She has a Master of Arts in Education Administration from Villanova University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English and Education from LaSalle University. She is a member of the International Facilities Management Association, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and CREW. Eileen McAnally Eileen McAnally began her career at MLH in 1975 as a credit representative. Over the intervening years, she has held positions of Assistant Credit Manager, Employment Interviewer, Employment Supervisor, Director of HR at Paoli Hospital, and Director of Employment for Main Line Health. In 2001 she was named Senior Vice President of Human Resources. In this role, Ms. McAnally is responsible for overall human resource functions of the System, including recruitment, benefits, compensation, education and development, employee relations and workers compensation. In addition, she is responsible for design, administration and implementation of human resource business initiatives, policies, procedures and programs. Ms. McAnally belongs to many professional and community organizations including: the Philadelphia and Suburban Healthcare Human Resources Society, where she served as President in 1990, the American Society of Healthcare Human Resources Administrators, the Society for Human Resources Management/Employment Management Association, the Greater Valley Forge Human Resources Association, the Philadelphia Human Resources Planning Group, World at Work, Chester County Human Resources Association and the Society of Healthcare Human Resources Professionals of PA. Prior to her employment at MLH, Ms. McAnally taught Language Arts and Mathematics for the 7th and 8th grade at St. Mary's Interparochial School in Philadelphia, PA. Ms. McAnally and her husband live in Newtown Square. Sarah A. Peterson Peterson's career in marketing and corporate communications spans more than 35 years and includes executive level positions in both healthcare and non-healthcare organizations. She most recently served as Senior Vice President, Corporate and Investor Communications, for Amegy Bank, headquartered in Houston, Texas, and for special projects for the chairman of Zions Bancorporation. Prior to joining Amegy Bank, Peterson held senior level positions with organizations including, Hill and Knowlton, Inc., Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, J.P. Morgan Chase and U.S. News and World Report. She graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Peterson's work has received national recognition by the American Business Communicators, the Public Relations Society of
America and the Bank Marketing Association. She has extensive community involvement and recently served as a board member
for the American Red Cross of Houston, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, United Way, and as an advisory board member of the Department
of Communications of the College of Charleston. Joel A. Port Joel Port is Vice President of Planning and Business Development for Main Line Health. In this position, Mr. Port is responsible for all strategic and business planning activities for Main Line Health (MLH) hospitals and its subsidiaries. He also has operational responsibility for MLH's Ambulance Transport Service. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Port held the position of Vice President, Physician Network Development for Great Valley Health/Main Line Health/Jefferson Health System which involved the acquisition and divestiture of physician practices, physician network development, negotiating physician employment and management contracts. Mr. Port has also held positions with Main Line Health/Jefferson Health System as Executive Director, Great Valley Health and Vice President, Paoli Hospital. Prior to his career with Main Line Health/Jefferson Health System, Mr. Port held the following positions: Assistant to the Executive Director at the Medical College of Pennsylvania; Consultant, Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company, Philadelphia, PA; Administrative Fellow, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Port holds his Masters Degree in Health Services Administration from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; he graduated
in 1979 from Clark University where he received his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Biology and Geography. In addition, he is
a Certified Public Accountant. George C. Prendergast, Ph.D. George C. Prendergast, Ph.D. became the President and CEO of the Lankenau Institute of Medical Research in December 2004. Dr. Prendergast is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he received his BA in Biochemistry. He received his MS in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University and his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Princeton University. He went on to obtain advanced training as an American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at NYU Medical Center, after which he joined the Department of Cancer Research at Merck Research Laboratories. In 1993, Dr. Pendergast was appointed Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor at The Wistar Institute, where he was designated a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences. Subsequently, he became Senior Director of the Cancer Research Group at The DuPont Pharmaceutical Company. In 2002, he moved his research efforts at Wistar and DuPont to the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, where he was appointed to the faculty as a Senior Investigator. Along the way, Dr. Pendergast has received numerous honors and recognitions and has a world-class reputation in his field.
He and his family reside in Bala Cynwyd. Harm J. Scherpbier, MD Dr. Scherpbier was Vice President of Software Engineering at CareScience, an outcomes measurement and analysis firm. He also was Medical Director at Aetna's U.S. Quality Algorithms division, responsible for performance measurement and outcomes analysis. Dr. Scherpbier is an active member of the Healthcare IT standards movement, particularly focused on Knowledge Representation standards, promoting the sharing and re-use of knowledge between healthcare organizations.& From 1995 to 1998, he chaired the HL7 Arden Syntax committee for Knowledge Representation. Dr. Scherpbier was born and raised in the Netherlands. He received his medical training at the University of Groningen, graduating
in 1986, and completed additional training in Medical Informatics at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, both in the Netherlands.
He moved to the United States in 1988. He and his family live in Fort Washington. Karen Thomas As Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Karen Thomas is responsible for the planning, implementation and support for Information Services of Main Line Health, which also includes telecommunications and audiovisual support for the system. Ms. Thomas came to Main Line Health in 1995 as the Assistante CIO, and has been involved with a variety of major IS implementations and MLH initiatives. She started her information technology career with Andersen Consulting, where she worked for many years in both healthcare and other industries. Later, she moved to Hahnemann University Hospital where she held a variety of IS management roles, including the Director of Patient and Physician Systems. Ms. Thomas is a member of the Health Information Management System Society and the College of Health Information Management Executives. She also serves as Vice President of the Greenridge Homeowners Association. Ms. Thomas received her undergraduate degree from Bucknell University and her Master of Health Administration from Duke University. She and her husband reside in Gulph Mills, PA. Nancy Valentine, RN, Ph.D. Nancy Valentine, RN, PhD, joined Main Line Health as Chief Nursing Officer in September, 2006. Dr. Valentine's career in nursing spans more than 35 years and includes successful positions in clinical nursing, nursing and hospital administration, academics and research, and the development of nursing policy and practice on a national level. Dr. Valentine served as the enterprise-wide chief nursing officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs in the 1990s, and was part of the leadership at the VA Hospitals that implemented extensive quality initiatives now viewed as a national model for patient safety. While at the VA, Dr. Valentine also served as Special Assistant, Health Affairs to the Secretary of the VA and Advisor to the VA Undersecretary for Health. After the VA, she served as the national senior nursing executive for CIGNA Healthcare, headquartered in Hartford, CT. Dr. Valentine grew up in the Somerton section of Philadelphia and received her nursing degree from the Rutgers University College of Nursing, followed by a Masters in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters in Public Health from the Harvard University School of Public Health. She received her doctorate in Economics and Health Policy from Brandeis University in 1991. She has held academic and teaching appointments at leading institutions such as Georgetown University and Catholic University in Washington, DC; Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, MA; Northeastern University in Boston, and Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. Much of Dr. Valentine's clinical practice and research has focused on psychiatric nursing and issues related to treating nurses and other healthcare practitioners suffering from substance abuse and mental illness. As an administrator, she has focused on issues related to quality, innovative applications of evidenced-based research, and the development of the nursing workforce through education, research, and emphasis on clinical excellence.
