Transfusion-free medicine is medical or surgical treatment that does not
use stored blood products. Advances in surgical and nonsurgical
approaches enable doctors to safely perform many procedures without the
need for transfusion.
Advantages of Transfusion-Free Medicine
Exposure to blood-borne diseases from donor blood is reduced.
The risk for hospital-acquired infections is lowered.
The length of hospital stay is shortened.
Understanding your Blood Treatment Options when Surgery is Necessary
Blood transfusions may be necessary when the body cannot produce blood
quickly enough due to significant blood loss or decreased blood cell
production because of illness or medications. When a patient needs to be
given blood or blood products (such as plasma or platelets). We offer
two treatment options:
Allogeneic blood—blood donated by an anonymous person that is
carefully screened for safety.
Directed or pre-designated blood—the use of your own previously
donated blood, or blood donated to you by a friend or relative
with a matching blood type. Patient blood management (PBM) is
the use of safe and proven medical and surgical techniques which
may reduce or eliminate the need for a blood transfusion.
