Lankenau Medical Center has an Internal Medicine Clinical Care Center
onsite under the leadership of Dr. Susan Burke, which administers to the
care of patients from many nearby communities. As with other areas of
our residency, the outpatient setting provides a balance of rigorous
academic teaching and valuable clinical exposure. Each categorical
resident will build their own panel of patients over a three-year
period. Every effort is made to provide continuity of care for patients
from the inpatient to the outpatient setting.
Residents also get experience with sick visits, urgent care and
telephone medicine. Over the course of three years, all categorical
residents will attend weekly continuity care sessions and develop
proficiency in evaluating and treating patients with a variety of
medical disorders under the supervision of attending physicians.
Particular emphasis is placed on clinical question generation and
evidenced based clinical decision making.
All categorical residents will do (in addition to their weekly scheduled
continuity clinics) carefully structured ambulatory block rotations that
include clinical experiences in Dermatology, ENT, Sports Medicine, Pain
Management, Physical Therapy, nutrition And diabetes, Ob/Gyn,
Ophthalmology and practice management as well as additional clinic time
and a home visit session. Our osteopathic preliminary interns are also
scheduled in family practice ambulatory rotations.
Opportunities to rotate with seasoned Internal Medicine physicians as
well as subspecialists with offices onsite are available throughout the
In the R3 year, the resident will serve a geriatric rotation at Saunders
House, a nursing home facility, which is located on the property
adjacent to Lankenau Medical Center and will also split this rotation
serving as Clinic Chief in the Clinical Care Center.
