Non-Invasive Program Stimulation Testing of ICDs (NIPS)
NIPS is performed following ICD implantation to ensure that the device
is both detecting and correcting abnormal heart rhythm properly. To
perform this test, Lankenau Heart Institute electrophysiologists use a
special computer that communicates with the patient’s ICD. Specific
techniques are used stimulate an abnormal heart rhythm or to test the
device’s ability to treat an abnormal heart rhythm while the patient is
asleep. This test is performed on an outpatient basis under general
anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes.
