Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital was one of the first institutions in the country to begin treating individuals with brain injury and stroke, and it has remained a leader since the first patient was admitted in 1971.

In the years since, the hospital has developed a full continuum of care of people who have experienced a brain injury or stroke. This system includes acute inpatient services, outpatient therapy services, Day Treatment, community re-entry services, and an injury prevention program for high school students and the community.

Our overall mission is to help each individual who has sustained a brain injury return to a life of the greatest independence possible. The treatment team works together with individuals and their families to address each person's specific needs and focus on specific goals in recovery. The key elements in the program are assisting individuals to recover function, developing strategies to compensate for deficits and manage stress, and involving the family and helping them manage their own life changes.

Our family-focused services include conferences with the treatment team, family education and support groups, an opportunity to room-in with your family member, and ongoing participation in care giving. In designing treatment programs, the treatment team makes use of the facilities and specialized services available within Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital. These include an indoor pool for aquatic therapy, an equestrian therapy program, horticultural therapy, and adapted driving instruction.

Services provided by the staff at Bryn Mawr Rehab are described below:

Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation
Within Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, our inpatient program is organized in patient care units based upon patient need. Specialized treatment teams assure that patients receive services from professionals most expert in a particular area of care. Each team, led by a neurologist or a rehabilitation physician and a case manager, includes all of the clinicians and support staff involved in the patient's direct care. Together, the patient, the family, and the treatment team establish realistic, functional goals and work toward those goals in therapy.

Families are offered an opportunity to room-in with their family member if there is an interest in participating in care giving. Requests for rooming in are considered on a case by case basis.

Other family services include weekly physician/case manager family rounds on the unit, family conferences, and participation days, whereby family members participate in a full day of therapies. Support groups which offer information, emotional support, and social contact both for the person who has experienced the injury and for family and friends are held at our facility.

Outpatient Rehabilitation
Patients recovering from stroke often require additional rehabilitation after a hospital stay. Our continuum of care provides outpatient services for those who live at home while continuing in a rehabilitation program.

Outpatient care includes medical care as well as physical, occupational and speech therapies, therapeutic recreation, psychology, neuropsychology, behavior management, and cognitive remediation services. In addition, adapted driving evaluation and instruction is also available.

Specialized Programs
Our Second Chance Program is designed to met the rehabilitation needs of stroke patients who may not have been given the opportunity for comprehensive rehab after their stroke. This includes patients who have already been discharged to home or a nursing home. The program helps individuals reduce their dependency on caregivers and increase their independence in areas such as mobility, self-care and feeding.

Young Stroke Program
While the majority of people affected by stroke are over age 65, as many as 25,000 people who sustain a stroke are under the age of 45. Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital's Young Stroke Program was designed to help these individuals resume as active and independent a lifestyle as possible. The program also emphasizes cognitive remediation, with a focus on relearning the skills necessary to return to work and daily responsibilities and resume family roles.
