Hospital Specialties & Services <
At Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, we treat a wide range of orthopedic conditions, including bilateral joint replacements, fractures, amputations and other injuries. Services are designed to build strength
and endurance, restore functional mobility, improve performance of daily activities, and manage pain. We encourage family
involvement in rehabilitative care whenever possible, particularly for persons with joint replacements, severe fractures and
amputations that may require intensive treatment and some period of immobility.
Rehabilitative treatment is available for most orthopedic conditions- from sprains and strains, sport injuries and bursitis
to joint replacement and fractures. The focus of this treatment is on helping clients regain strength and functioning as safely
and efficiently as possible.
 |
Patient Profile More than 2,000 patients receive inpatient services each year at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital for joint replacements, fractures,
and amputations. They range in age from 18–97 years old. The average stay is 8 days and ranges from 5–14 days. More than 90
percent of our inpatients return home after discharge.
|
 |
Team Approach Rehabilitative treatment emphasizes a team approach. At Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, the inpatient treatment team consists of
a rehabilitation physician (physiatrist), internal medicine physician, rehabilitation nurse, pharmacist, physical therapist,
occupational therapist and case manager. The team might also include a registered dietitian, psychologist and recreational
therapist.
|
 |
The Scope of Our Services As a comprehensive rehabilitation facility, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital's services include not only inpatient care featuring
intensive therapy, but also outpatient care for the treatment of strains, sprains, bursitis and sport injuries. We also offer
a full complement of specialized services, such as orthotics and prosthetics, an Amputee Clinic, pain management and aquatics.
We have the clinical expertise to address any special lifestyle or vocational needs. Our intention is to offer individuals
the opportunity to choose the most appropriate program of care based on the type and severity of their condition.
|
 |
Treatment Emphasis Orthopedic injuries and conditions are generally characterized by a decrease in strength, endurance, and mobility along with
increased pain. In response, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital's treatment options concentrate on improving endurance and strength
through a regimented exercise program, improving mobility with gait training, prescribing adaptive aids for activities of
daily living, and alleviating pain through medical management and therapy. We utilize an individualized treatment approach
that takes into account the severity of the injury and the personal lifestyle of the patient.
We work with the individual to facilitate a return to a level of activity that will enhance his or her quality of life in
the home and community. We encourage and support patient and family education in rehabilitative care whenever possible, particularly
for conditions such as joint replacement and severe fractures, to ease the transition to an active lifestyle after hospitalization.
Education is provided regarding exercise programs, adaptive equipment, pain management, home safety and caregiver training.
|
 |
Therapy Goals Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital's therapy programs are created to help restore complete functioning. This may mean starting treatment
with pain reduction (such as the use of hot and cold packs) and then using exercise to increase movement, range-of-motion
and muscle strength. Both physical therapy and occupational therapy are used to improve gait and increase upper body strength
and coordination. Patients receive training in performing activities of daily living with adaptive equipment and learn how
to prevent falls.

Specialized Services for Individuals with Orthopedic Conditions The Amputee Clinic involves the expertise of a physiatrist, a physical therapist and prosthetist of your choice to coordinate
needs after undergoing amputation. This professional team meets to determine when a residual limb is ready to be fitted for
a temporary or permanent prosthesis. An Amputee Support Group meets twice monthly at the hospital to share solutions for practical
problems. Friends and family are welcome to participate. (For further information about these programs, please call the Amputee Clinic Coordinator at 610-251-5566.)
Aquatic therapy provides relief from pain and improves mobility and endurance for individuals with a variety of orthopedic
conditions. Our pool is on-site, indoor and heated. Group and individualized exercise programs are offered on both an inpatient
and outpatient basis.
