Cruisin' not Boozin' Program Description
The Cruisin' Not Boozin' Program is an educational outreach program of Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital aimed at reducing the incidence of death and injury among young people and adults from impaired driving accidents. Impaired driving includes the use of alcohol, drugs, prescription medicine, or distraction while behind the wheel. This unique injury-prevention program brings speakers to tell their personal survival stories at elementary, middle and high schools as well as at colleges, adult organizations, DUI classes and juvenile probation programs. They recount how their lives were permanently altered by a brain or spinal cord injury from impaired driving. Each speaker has a different story. Some were drivers, others were passengers and others were hit by impaired drivers. Family members describe the crushing losses and sacrifices they have endured while caring for an injured son or daughter. The speakers are able to connect with their audiences in a very personal and compelling manner. It is a sobering experience that brings individuals face-to-face to see and hear the true-life tragedies of impulsive or thoughtless decisions behind the wheel. Discussions usually follow about the importance of good choices and safety planning. Since its inception in 1989, the Cruisin' Not Boozin' Program has reached more than 300,000 children, teenagers and young adults.
