Bryn Mawr Hospital's Radiation Oncology Center offers the most advanced cancer-fighting technology in the Philadelphia region!New Technology. Greater Precision. Better Care.

New radiation therapies have greatly enhanced our ability to treat cancer more effectively. Today, more than half of patients with cancer are treated with radiation therapy -- the careful use of high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells in the body. At the Bryn Mawr Hospital Cancer Center, new advances in radiation oncology now enable us to more precisely target tumors, minimizing treatment side effects and with faster results than ever before. The result is a more aggressive approach to cancer treatment with improved quality of life.

Bryn Mawr Hospital's Radiation Oncology Center combines sophisticated technology with compassionate care and comfort. We employ the latest in treatment technology and amenities that increase patient comfort and privacy. Our facility offers convenient, free parking, a private entrance for radiation patients, extended hours and treatment areas that are comforting. In addition, we work closely with the local American Cancer Society to assist patients with transportation needs.

Our Clinical Expertise is Unmatched
Board certified radiation oncologists lead an experienced team of licensed radiation therapists, oncology-certified nurses, PhD and board-certified physicists and certified medical dosimetrists. They work in conjunction with each patient's treatment team of medical oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and other specialists to provide a comprehensive, individualized program of care. Registered dietitians and oncology social workers round out our cancer team to address each patient's specific needs.

Our Capabilities
The Bryn Mawr Hospital Radiation Oncology Center employs the latest in treatment technologies, including:
  • Varian 21EX linear accelerators with IMRT/IGRT capability. We are one of only a handful of centers in the region to offer these recent advances in the treatment of cancers.

  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is computer-driven technology that delivers a higher dose of radiation more precisely to the tumor, while increasing protection of surrounding organs and tissues from damaging exposure. IMRT allows for varied radiation intensity, which leads to improved cancer control and survival.

  • Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) delivers a high dose of radiation to a tumor with less harm to surrounding normal tissue. IGRT uses a fully robotic On-Board Imaging System coupled with a sophisticated Respiratory-Gating System to locate and target tumors.

  • Large bore multi-slice CT scanners within the department allow for better target visualization and offers more convenience for the patient.
  • Brachytherapy which includes radiation seed implant and High Dose Rate (HDR) equipment for effective treatment of prostate, gynecologic, breast and other cancers.

Brachytherapy is an outpatient procedure that involves the implantation of radioactive sources directly into the cancerous site. For certain patients with special clinical conditions, it offers additional therapeutic options.

  •  MammoSite®: We were one of the first cancer centers in the region to offer this revolutionary technique for breast cancer treatment. MammoSite® is a new minimally-invasive method of delivering internal radiation therapy thru a catheter following a lumpectomy for breast cancer. MammoSite® provides minimal radiation exposure to healthy tissue and reduces the potential for side effects and improve cosmetic results. Therapy is given on an outpatient basis and can be completed in five days.
  • (SRS) Stereotactic Radiotherapy Surgery: This advanced technology delivers extremely precise single doses of focused radiation for benign and cancerous conditions. At this time, this service is provided on an outpatient-basis at Bryn Mawr Hospital only.

"With these techniques, patients can be treated on an outpatient basis over a much shorter period of time, with better cancer control and improved tolerance, " said Richard J. Carella, MD, Main Line Health System System Chief of Radiation Oncology.
