About Bryn Mawr Hospital Welcome to Bryn Mawr Hospital Bryn Mawr Hospital combines sophisticated medical technologies with a century-long tradition of community care.By Andrea Gilbert, President Welcome to the Bryn Mawr Hospital Web site. Bryn Mawr Hospital was established in 1893 by Dr. George S. Gerhard, a local doctor who believed that medical expertise and community care should work hand in hand. For more than 100 years, the hospital and the communities we serve have supported each other to improve the health and quality of life of our neighborhoods. Today, Bryn Mawr Hospital, a not-for-profit health care delivery network in Philadelphia's western suburbs, continues its leadership as a sophisticated community hospital offering advanced medical technology and access to some of the most qualified medical staff in the region. Our specialists in reproductive medicine and infertility help couples achieve their dreams of parenthood, while our new maternity wing provides outstanding comfort and care to more than 2000 newborns and moms every year. For babies who need critical medical care, Bryn Mawr Hospital has a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit -- the highest designation available. As children grow, we care for their needs in the Main Line’s only in-patient pediatric unit. Pediatric specialists, through our affiliation with Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, staff the unit and are here around the clock. Pediatric subspecialists from duPont, in cardiology, ear, nose and throat, orthopedics, and gastrointestinal medicine, among others, have regular office hours at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Bryn Mawr Hospital’s longstanding commitment to providing the community with advanced medical technologies is evident in our cancer, surgical and cardiac services. Our physicians were among the first in the region to perform innovative procedures for identifying and treating breast cancer, including stereotactic and sentinel node biopsy. These procedures offer new hope to the women of our community. We treat more heart attack patients than other local hospitals, and have a well-established open-heart surgery program that has been saving lives for more than 20 years. Additionally, Bryn Mawr Hospital surgeons perform minimally invasive surgery of the colon, gallbladder and prostate, reflecting leading-edge clinical practice regionally. The orthopedic program at Bryn Mawr Hospital is ranked among the top 100 in the nation. Lead by an experienced team of surgeons, our orthopedic service continues to be widely sought-after for its clinical and patient satisfaction outcomes. Finally, our patients tell us that what comforts them most is the compassionate care given by our nurses and professional staff. We work hard to know our patients. Over time, those relationships develop into a feeling of family that grows and deepens – as evidenced by the hundreds of “family members” who return to Bryn Mawr as volunteers. Day by day, and year by year, community members come back to Bryn Mawr, giving generously of their time, and surrounding our patients with warmth, hope and compassion. I am extremely proud to be a part of the Bryn Mawr Hospital team and I extend to you our commitment to quality, service and
compassion whenever you may need our care and help.
