The Health Education Center, located in the Frankel Lobby of Lankenau Hospital, is a resource for area teachers, youth group leaders and parents.  With eye popping, interactive displays and sophisticated audio visual technology, the Health Education Center offers children the chance to learn about themselves and their bodies. Through tours, interactive exhibits and classes, kids and teens gain a greater insight and understanding of a wide variety of topics including: general health, food and nutrition, drugs and alcohol, and family life.

In the Center's two classrooms, children can:

  • Follow the flow of blood through the heart and learn how arteries become blocked.
  • Experience how physical activity and stress affects the heart
  • Understand the makeup and functions of the eye, ear and mouth
  • See the different sections of the brain and how they control the body
  • See the building blocks of  a typical human cell, as well as specialized cells in the body
  • Learn how the body’s different systems - skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and others work alone and together, and how these systems are influenced by drugs and alcohol
  • Discuss how both legal and illegal drugs affect the body
  • Learn the nutritional value of different foods and their benefit in the body
  • Follow the development of a fetus from conception to birth
  • Learn the effects of "yo-yo" dieting on the body
  • And more!
In all of our presentations, information is presented in a factual and non-judgmental manner. The goal is to give youngsters the information they need to make informed decisions about their own health behavior--without scaring or preaching.

Classes at the Center are designed especially for children in grade Kindergarten through ninth and are available FREE OF CHARGE to schools, religious organizations, scout troops and any organization that serves young children.  Classes average in length from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. All classes are led by trained health education instructors.

The Lankenau Hospital Health Education Center can supplement the science or health curriculum and meets many of the PA State curriculum guidelines.

Health Education for the Community from a Leader in Clinical Care, Medical Education and Research
As a leading teaching and research institution, education has always been part of our mission at Lankenau Hospital.

In 1953, when Lankenau Hospital moved to suburban Wynnewood, PA from West Philadelphia, it opened the first hospital-based health museum in the country. Our belief then, as it is today, was that a hospital should help prevent injury and disease, not just treat them.

For more than 30 years, Lankenau's health museum hosted tens of thousands of children and adults. That museum evolved into today's Health Education Center and remains committed to providing a modern facility that supports the health education of children across our community and beyond. We offer the Health Education Center to children and those who care about them.
