The Lankenau Center for Spinal Disorders encompasses all aspects of spinal reconstructive surgery and back/neck pain relief ranging from lumbar discectomies to complex tumor surgeries. Other services include minimally invasive procedures including fracture management and spinal diagnostics. The Center is complemented by an aggressive research component that allows patients access to innovative procedures and motion preserving technologies, such as lumbar and cervical disc replacement.

The Center is staffed by three respected spine specialists: Scott A. Rushton, M.D., Medical Director; Richard A. Balderston, M.D., Associate Medical Director; and Philip M. Maurer, M.D., Director, Interventional Spine Program.

Drs. Rushton, Balderston and Maurer, partners in Booth Bartolozzi Balderston Orthopaedics, utilize a team approach in caring for each of their patients and are committed to working closely with the patient and the referring physician to manage each case with a coordinated plan of care.

The Physicians...

Scott A. Rushton, M.D., Medical Director
Dr. Rushton received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University.  He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and a fellowship in reconstructive spine surgery at Case Western Reserve.  He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery.  Dr. Rushton's specialty areas include minimally invasive techniques for spine surgery, trauma, tumors, degenerative arthritis, and cervical and lumbar disc replacement. More Info!

Richard A. Balderston, M.D., Associate Medical Director
Dr. Balderston received his medical degree from The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.  He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery.  Dr. Balderston's specialty areas include spine surgery, lumbar disc, lumbar total disc replacement, spinal stenosis and scoliosis. More Info!

Philip M. Maurer, M.D., Director, Interventional Spine Program
Dr Maurer received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University.  He trained in general surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Boston University, and completed a residency in anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Maurer is board-certified in anesthesiology with additional certification of added qualifications in pain management. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical and lumbar spine-related problems; minimally invasive surgery (vertebral fractures, disc herniations) spinal injections, discography, intradiscal therapies (IDET), and spinal cord stimulator implantation. More Info!
