Fast, powerful, smart…everything a cancer weapon should be
TrueBeam™STx is a new and powerful technology that is expanding
treatment options for many people with cancer, and the cancer team at
Lankenau is the most experienced in the region to use it. Lankenau
Medical Center has been using TrueBeam™STx to fight cancer—faster,
smarter, and with more precision—for nearly 2 years, longer than any
cancer treatment center in the tri-state area.
What is TrueBeam™STx?
TrueBeam™STx is an innovative system for delivering radiation therapy.
The system uses a sophisticated linear accelerator (LINAC) to focus
powerful radiation on a tumor, precisely targeting cancer while sparing
healthy tissue. Advanced tools and technologies work seamlessly to treat
tumors faster and with more power and precision, creating new
possibilities for treating many cancers. Advanced features of
TrueBeam™STx include the ability to:
Double the dose of treatment to a tumor
More finely shape the beam of radiation around a tumor
to protect sensitive structures such as the spinal cord
and vital organs
Check and adjust for patient position and degree of
tumor motion during treatment, for accurate tumor
Synchronize radiation delivery with the patient’s
breathing, for continuous high-dose delivery during
treatment of lung and other tumors subject to movement
Designed for versatility, TrueBeam™STx can be used for radiation
therapy as well as radiosurgery—intensified therapy delivered in 1 to 5
sessions to treat smaller, well-defined tumors, including brain, lung,
and prostate cancers. The ability to deliver more powerful radiation
more quickly and precisely allows:
Shorter treatment times (10-20 minutes rather than 40-60
minutes for some tumors), for greater patient comfort
Fewer rounds of treatment (5 rather than 40 for certain
prostate tumors), for greater patient convenience
Expanding Treatment Options
TrueBeam™STx can treat any cancer for which radiation therapy is
indicated and is opening up treatment options for patients who cannot
tolerate surgery or who have tumors that are difficult to remove
surgically. Cancers treated with TrueBeam™STx at Lankenau Medical Center
Head and neck
TrueBeam™ STx radiosurgery is not appropriate
for all patients. Serious side effects may occur, such as peripheral
tissue damage. Common side effects include fatigue and skin irritation.
Certain TrueBeam STx procedures may require the use of a minimally
invasive head frame. Treatment times and number of treatments may vary.
Ask your doctor if TrueBeam STx radiosurgery is right for you.
